By now you know that if we’re traveling, we like to share entertainment choices in the various cities we’re in or the ships we’re on. On Saturday we began a 7-nt sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line ship Pride of America doing a sailing around the Hawaiian islands. This ship is very unique because it flies the American flag and a majority of the crew onboard are American. That differs from every other cruise ship out there which are all foreign-flagged and must travel to foreign destinations. Because this Hawaii-only itinerary never visits a foreign port, only an American ship can do the route and Pride of America does it every Saturday.Ocean Drive Bar is located on Deck 11 midship adjacent the South Beach Pool. While there was a “Welcome Aboard” show later in the evening in one of the ship’s lounges, there was no Sail-Away Party here at the pool as there is on most cruises.ODB was doing a brisk business though.With most passengers arriving earlier that afternoon from the U.S. mainland with body clocks 3-6 hours later than Hawaiian time, the pool and many public areas on board were not that busy on this first day.There was a DJ delivering “poolside vibes” even if it wasn’t a traditional Sail-Away party.San Jose-based DJ Tidal Wave (USA) was on the decks playing Classic Top 40 tunes such as “Everybody Dance Now”, “Pump Up The Jam” and “Disco Inferno”. Pink’s Champagne Bar is located on Deck 6 midship and we visited during our first evening onboard.Pink’s is home to crooners, pianists and occasionally the ship’s small Hawaiian band.During our first night visit we saw an acoustic guitar set from Doug (USA). Doug doesn’t have a last name apparently; he just goes by “Doug”.He was great but it seems the kind of music typically played here deserves an intimate venue and not this huge space such as Pink’s. While many of the newer cruise ships have done away with traditional nightclubs in favor of multipurpose venues, Pride of America retains its dance club Mardi Gras. We prefer it that way.Last night was 70’s Disco night and we arrived just as the ship’s live band was cranking-up at 9:30PM.The Wave (USA)Dance floor filled-up immediately for songs such as “Boogie Oogie Oogie”, “Celebration” and “Play That Funky Music”. We noticed immediately that the dance floor is missing a shiny disco ball, lol.Songs such as “Dancing Queen”, “I Will Survive” and “Freak Out” kept the dance floor active.The ship’s animation team was on hand to keep the crowd on hand. Quite a few Floridians in the ship’s crew and this guy is from Ocoee!Soul Train style Disco line passing through as the band played “Car Wash”.You know we love our 70’s Disco and OEN will have full coverage from the World’s Largest Disco in Buffalo in November.Band did a great job replicating the sounds of the original songs.At 10:15PM the band segment ended and DJ Tidal Wave took over from the booth overlooking the dance floor.He would continue with Disco for the first half hour or so before switching the music over to more contemporary dance hits. We heard “Stayin’ Alive”, “That’s The Way I Like It” and “Ladies’ Night”.Dance floor thinned a bit once the band ended.But a good time was had by all.
