Club Reports: Gimme Gimme Disco @ The Abbey, Magic Mike’s Birthday Bash @ Ace Cafe

Saturday night in the city and we began our evening at The Abbey event center in Orlando’s Lake Eola district. We were here for some 70’s music at their Gimme Gimme Disco night!
The doors opened at 8PM and we arrived fashionably late around 9PM to find this queue at the door.
And we walked inside to this as “Boogie Wonderland” was playing.
Last night’s 70’s grooves were delivered by DJ Tay (USA).
And he was quite animated about it too.
We heard “The Freak”. We heard “Boogie Fever”.
Dance floor got more and more crowded for songs such as “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, “He’s The Greatest Dancer” and “Pretty Young Thing (PYT)”.
The crowd brought their 70’s requisites such as bell bottoms.
Go Go boots.
Platforms.
Headbands.
And white people wearing Afros!
Train coming through for “Conga”. This is really a 1985 song but the Complaint Department was closed so there was nothing we could do about it.
Of course at a show called Gimme Gimme Disco, there was plenty of Abba (S). We heard “Lay All Your Love On Me”, “SOS” and “Dancing Queen” during our visit. A whole new generation discovered Abba thanks to the film “Mama Mia”.
Birthday Party in progress. HAPPY 45!
Gimme Gimme Disco runs 3-4 times per year here at The Abbey but we’ve not yet seen the next date.
It’s always a super-fun night!
“I Will Survive”
Such great music and a good time was had by all.
We next headed from downtown Orlando to downtown Sanford where we visited relatively new club/restaurant Ace Cafe Sanford for the first time.
But first we had to try to talk our way past the Door Hosts.
And we walked into this!
Two Breaks legends were still on stage when we first arrived.
DJ Jimmy Joslin (USA) and DJ Mark Sanchez (USA).
And the dance floor was absolutely packed!
With the “Welcome to Rockville” rock music festival happening in nearby Daytona Beach and the “Rolling Loud” hip hop music festival happening in nearby Orlando, we were wondering if this show was the right choice for last night. But then we saw Dorsey doing his thing down in the middle of the dance floor and we KNEW we were in the right place!
The lasers were flying.
Dance floor stayed busy.
You can’t have Breaks and not have some Break dancing.
Great to see the new Ace Cafe have DJ shows.
They have this large bar at the back of the room near the entrance.
Another bar on the side near the stage.
This outdoor area has potential for more music should they desire to do so.
We ran into so many peeps from the music scene. Some were new but most we knew.
It was 11:30PM and through the haze we could see that a new DJ had come on.
The headliner, celebrating the big 6-0, the legend: DJ Magic Mike (USA).
Bass, Breaks, Classic Dance, he was getting into his set!
First time seeing him since we saw him at a show in Miami Lakes during Miami Music Week in March.
Mrs. Magic Mike was bouncing to his set.
Love them!
The crowd loves them too.
As 1AM approached, no one was leaving just yet.
Ace is now the place in Sanford. Hope to see more shows here.
Spotted in the Tech Booth: DJ Swagkerr (USA) and DJ Drizzy (USA).
Spotted updating her Facebook in the Chill Room: DJ Mer Made (USA). She is part of an all-female DJ lineup playing at Oliv Bar in DTO on May 28th that includes Darcii Darka (USA), Gruv Girl (USA) and more!
Crowd going ballistic for Bass version of Darude (FIN) classic “Sandstorm”.
More peeps!
Thank you everyone for your poses.
Magic Mike introducing his protégé taking over around 1AM…..
DJ Slug FL (USA)
First time seeing him play.
This was definitely thee place to be last night and a good time was had by all. Happy Birthday, Mike!
