Concert Report: Lioness (Melbourne)

If you look at this address on Google Streetview, you’ll find an old derelict building in downtown Eau Gallie, Florida that once housed a furniture store and has been subsequently rehabilitated into this trendy bar and restaurant complex. Eau Gallie merged into the city of Melbourne back in the late 60’s so it no longer exists as its own municipality but it is its own artsy area of town.
The building is now home to Nomads Canteen and last night, home to “Lioness”, a fundraising event for Women’s Center of Brevard. When we heard there would be an all-female DJ lineup, we knew we had to be there!
There were two areas of music including this one outdoors on the rooftop. We arrived around 5PM to find DJ ZZ (USA) bravely playing Breaks out here in the cold and wind. DJ Medley (USA) had played earlier.
Always great to hear some DJ Icey (USA)!
There was actually a crowd out here but too bad we didn’t have a balmy evening.
But she had the crowd bouncing.
The inside music began at 5:30PM here in the main room with a raised stage at the far end.
DJ MixxKayla (USA) was the opener and she was playing her very first public performance. Her DJ name was a cute play on her real name “Michaela”.
The Homosassa Springs-based DJ played an impressive House and EDM set.
Already a few people on the soon-to-be jammed dance floor.
Looking the opposite direction in the main room, we see a large bar on bottom floor and another bar on the upper level. The entire place, to us, was reminiscent of the former Ace Cafe in Orlando with the multiple levels and wire railings.
The adjoining room downstairs has a bar and kitchen in that old Airstream and is used for their main restaurant seating.
Decor in Nomad’s is brilliant including this old bus.
And this old trailer…..and more.
Upstairs on the rooftop we found a bundled-up DJ Heiress (USA) in the booth.
She had the honor of doing a “Sunset” set although the thick cloud cover prevented the sun for doing its part.
Still a nice assortment of hardy dancers up here!
Back inside, the Hoopz troupe of aerialists had begun their performances.
Beautiful.
Impressive.
We struggle to reach the top shelf in our kitchen.
Ashley Anderson (USA) came on next around 7:30PM doing a mix of Old Skool Breaks and some current tunes remixed to Breaks.
We had heretofore only known Ashley as a vocalist so this was the first time we had seen her doing a DJ set. It was great!
She also sang live to one of her selections.
As 8PM approached, a crowd was forming.
Orlando was representing!
When Dorsey is in the crowd, you know you’re in the right place!
Back upstairs and outside, DJ Ms. Chevious (USA) had taken over.
It was all-vinyl, all-night up here.
It had gotten colder and windier yet there was still a few brave souls gathered to listen.
We ran into so many peeps from the Central Florida and Space Coast music scene. Most we knew but some were new.
Back in the warmth, the 7:20PM DJ had begun.
The “Lady of the House”, DJ Jennifer Marley (USA).
Playing a mostly House set that included a mashup of “Fancy $hit” and “Just Be Good To Me” which we had never heard previously.
Dance floor chatter.
It was like a “homecoming” down there.
The always-animated Jennifer Marley. Her set also included some Darude (FIN) “Sandstorm” and Faithless (GB) “Insomnia”.
MC Jamie Blue (USA) provided vocals for one of the songs.
Chilling in the loge.
We had seen DJ Heiress earlier at the outdoor booth but around 8:30PM she delivered an indoor set too.
The Dallas-based DJ played a mostly Breaks set but we may have heard some House in there too.
Ending her set with Delerium (CDN) Trance classic, “Silence”.
She had the club bouncing.
Great set!
And since we were now into regular clubbing hours, the dance floor was getting busy.
They say you can never go wrong with Go Go girls.
Well damn, they were right!
One more trip out-the-door to see DJ Vixen Stylee (USA).
Drum & Bass, of course. The 9PM set from DJ Venus (USA) would get scratched due to extreme cold as we were headed to the mid-20’s overnight…..in central Florida!
Around 9PM, organizer Rose and Tech head honcho Rezpro both took turns to thank everyone for coming out and supporting this year’s women’s charity. The venue, the DJ’s, the tech all donated their time while the crowd made donations at the door to show their support.
South Florida-based DJ Medley took over at this time.
Going mostly Electro on us.
Medley and DJ Meaux (USA) play tonight in Orlando at Alfie’s HiFi in the Mills/50 district.
Dance floor stayed packed.
The lasers began flying.
These two guys were making art on the spot.
Such creativity.
They say you can never go wrong with Go Go girls.
Well damn, they were right!
More peeps!
In the 10PM time slot…..
DJ Amber Jane (USA)
The dance floor had reached capacity.
Electro Breaks!
Engaging with her audience.
Jamie Blue live singing of “A Beautiful Life”.
More Hoopz!
Amazing!
One more shift change at 11PM to DJ NautiKat (USA).
This was her first club performance last night since relocating from Ohio to Florida this past November.
Playing a mostly Breaks set that included Breakbeat versions of “Whoomp (There It Is)” and “Groove Jet”. Great to have you here in the Sunshine State, Kelley.
The show would only run until midnight but it stayed jammed until the end.
It was a wonderful event for a wonderful cause. And a good time was had by all.
