By now you know that if we’re traveling, we like to share entertainment choices in the various cities we’re in or the ships we’re on. Yesterday we began a 7-nt sailing of Royal Caribbean ship Jewel of the Seas traveling from San Juan to Fort Lauderdale.Out on the pool deck Deck 11 midship, we found duo Caribbean Wave (JA) playing tropical tunes. And then around 4:15PM as our ship pulled away from the pier, it was time for that cruise tradition of traditions, the Sail-Away Party. If this view looks familiar, it’s because we had a similar one two weekends ago on sister ship Serenade of the Seas! This one was considerably more crowded than that last one.The music last night delivered by DJ Snedden (IND).We heard traditional Sail-Away party line dances such as “Cupid Shuffle”, “Cha Cha Slide” and “The Wobble”.We heard some Conga, we heard some Disco. One of the more fun sail-away parties we’ve been to in a while. Not exactly packed to the rafters like on some cruises but not bad either. And as we sailed out to sea beside old San Juan and the Castillo San Felipe del Morro…..…..a good time was had by all.Around 10PM we returned to the ship’s Atrium on Deck 4 midship. This first night of the cruise was 70’s Night and we found Kronos Band (RP) playing in one of the atrium’s corners. They were playing 70’s Disco hits such as “I Love The Nightlife” and “Le Freak”.That was followed by a short session of Disco dance lessons with a member of the ship’s entertainment staff teaching “The Hustle”.Lots of 70’s attire on hand last night. A reminder that we hope to see you next Saturday night May 9th for “Gimme Gimme Disco” at The Abbey downtown with advance tickets HERE.All of a sudden and without warning members of the ship’s Animation team were on the atrium stairs and the 70’s Night party had officially begun! The dance floor was absolutely packed! We heard classic Disco songs such as “Stayin’ Alive”, “Brick House”, “Night Fever” and “Hot Stuff”.Another surprise: The Village People (USA) made a live appearance and performed songs such as “In The Navy” and “YMCA”. Wow!Although we’ve probably been on close to a hundred cruises, something we’ve never experienced before was members of the entertainment staff dancing on the lifts with passengers!Going up and down with them; crazy! The Atrium had a shiny disco ball (sort of) so you know they’re legit. At 11PM another first for us at an atrium party, even on Royal Caribbean.Balloon drop!DJ Snedden (IND) took over at this point and continued with 70’s Disco hits such as “September”, “Shake Your Groove Thing”, “Groove Tonight” and a short segment of “I Feel Love”. The latter song by Donna Summer (USA), released in 1977, is considered by music experts to be one of the first popular songs ever to use a synthesizer in what would later be called electronic dance music. One of the funnest 70’s Nights we’ve experienced on a cruise ship and a good time was had by all.
