Club Reports: The Axe Trap, Sessions, Elixir Bar, Oliv Bar By King Bob in Club Reports November 16, 2024 One weekend after EDC-Orlando and there was a surprisingly large number of events going on. We began our Friday evening at The Axe Trap in Winter Park. By now you know this place is home every Saturday night to Barbarella 3.0, the home of 80’s New Wave and Alternative. But once per month on Fridays, it’s also home to Memento Mori, Barbarella‘s darker side. We began our Friday extra-early and arriving here prior to 10PM, there was already a crowd on the dance floor. With Memento Mori resident DJ Lavidicus (USA) dropping the tunes. The music mix of Industrial, Dark Wave, Synthpop and more brings out the Goth crowd. But come as you are. As long as you’re wearing black. DJ Lavidicus tells OEN they’re working on a specific Friday monthly to hold Memento Mori and that likely will be the second Friday of every month. However, in December he will be playing here on NYE instead and then in January they will be holding a special Memento Mori 10th Anniversary show. Stay tuned! Good early crowd which I’m sure it would get packed as it got later. There’s a brand new club on Pine Street and last night was opening night at Sessions. This is located where The Crow previously operated and Ghost Bar prior to that. (Not sure what they did with Eddie the friendly ghost that once occupied this place.) DJ Prankstisci (USA) had opened the brand new Palm Tree Club last weekend and he was here now opening this brand new venue. Sessions was pretty jammed last night and as you can see, it’s two levels. The downstairs bar was mobbed but there’s another bar upstairs towards the rear. They don’t say Danley. We don’t think Jeff Kenney was here. People were bouncing in place to the music which was a mix of EDM, Top 40, Latin and light Hip Hop. Not sure that this venue breaks any new ground in the local scene but it was nicely redone, has an upscale vibe and creates another downtown option. Elixir Bar is the downtown venue for international touring DJ’s to be seen up close and personal. We arrived after 11PM and found this on their famous outdoor dance patio. DJ 82 Degrees (USA) was playing mostly non-vocal House. But on this first chilly night of an Orlando winter, just not a lot of people here last night. A few minutes after midnight, the arrival of headliner DJ Nico de Andrea (F). Over the years he’s collaborated on songs with fellow French DJ’s such as David Guetta, Bob Sinclar and Martin Solveig. Fellow French DJ Matt Sassari (F) plays here at Elixir tomorrow night, DJ duo Chapter & Verse (GB) plays here the following Sunday and popular DJ Cristoph (GB) plays here next month. Tonight, Miami-based DJ FIIN (USA) plays here. Advance tickets here. Moving from downtown Orlando to uptown Orlando for one more stop at Oliv Bar. We walked into this. DJ Auphoria (RA) was at one end of the circular room. It’s a small room and it was packed! There is a small full-liquor bar opposite the entrance. Mostly non-vocal House had the crowd bouncing. Spotted on the dance floor: Dina’s Angels DJ Sachin Talikot (IND/USA) had played earlier. These House sessions at Oliv Bar take place every other Friday night so the next one is on November 29th. Would love to see this become a weekly. A good time was had by all. Social:TwitterFacebookEmailLinkedInRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppPocketTelegramLike this:Like Loading...
