Led by songwriter Michael Fitzpatrick, Fitz & the Tantrums have a retro sound inspired by Motown and Stax Records. The band was initially formed as the Tantrums, but the lineup grew from there. Starting with the purchase of an old church organ, Fitzpatrick decided to recruit an old college friend, James King, to add horn arrangements to the material. Eventually the group developed into a co-ed septet. The band now consists of Michael Fitzpatrick (lead vocals), Noelle Scaggs (co-lead vocals and percussion), James King (saxophone, flute, keyboard, percussion and guitar), Joseph Karnes (bass guitar), Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards) and John Wicks (drums and percussion).
Fitz & the Tantrums musical style can be described as “soul influenced indie pop.” Their imagination and energy defied the odds to become a chart-topping phenomenon. Songs like their catchy first single, “Out Of My League” demonstrate the drama and passion that can be found in the band’s live shows.
